Ginseng Oolong is a lightly fermented oolong coated with a powder of ginseng, licorice root, and sometimes other herbs. Thanks to the coating, the tea acquires an intense spicy-sweet flavor with earthy and medicinal notes, while brewing reveals the character of the base oolong. The product is popular in Russia and the CIS as a tonic and wellness drink, however quality varies greatly from premium Taiwanese batches to cheap Fujian versions where ginseng is replaced by licorice.
The first steep delivers rich licorice sweetness, ginseng bitterness, and earthy spice, transitioning in the second and third steeps to floral and creamy nuances of the base oolong, with a long sweet aftertaste and a light tingling coolness.
